CHAPTER 22

Hell Hole

Satisfied the rope attached to one of the posts surrounding the hole he tugged on would hold, Shaw stepped onto the top of the metal staircase and shone his flashlight into the dark depths. The stairs spiraled down further than the beam’s reach, hiding whatever lay below. He turned to those watching him. “When I’ve seen what’s down there, I’ll let you know if it’s safe to follow.”

Baloc nodded. “I’m certain whatever you find, it’ll be nothing we expected.”

Shaw had no doubts about that. He started his descent slowly and over cautiously, but after he had descended a few spirals and detected no weakness in the staircase structure, he moved faster. He stopped a few minutes later when he felt a tug on the line. A glance up revealed the tautly stretched rope wasn’t long enough. The flashlight he aimed below picked out the bottom a short distance below. He unhitched the line and continued his descent. Feeling dizzy from the constant circling, when he reached the bottom, he rested to let his equilibrium settle. A glance around his surroundings picked out a short, rough-hewn tunnel that curved slightly to an arched opening.

Baloc’s raised voice echoed down the stairwell. “Are you okay, Kurt?”

Shaw lifted his gaze to the small circle of light he judged to be about two hundred feet above, making him realize how deep he was. “I’m at the bottom and going to have a look around.”

He crossed to the arched opening and gazed in fascination at what the flashlight highlighted. After realizing he had been staring for a few moments, he dragged his eyes away, crossed to the staircase and shouted, “You can come down. The staircase is solid, so no need to use the rope.”

While he waited for the others to join him, he lit a cigar and wondered what they would discover at the end of the long passage through the archway.
